Betty Wright

Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter Betty Wright is in a league of her own.  This super soul-stress first appeared on the music scene at the age of eleven and nabbed a recording contract by the age of twelve.

During her teenage years, she racked up hits such as “Thank You” and Paralyzed.”  Later at the age of 17, Wright used a little sugar, vinegar and sass to create her global-smash hit and what would become her signature song “Clean Up Woman.”  The record refers to a particular individual who “cleans up” and “collects” any men who have been tossed away by love.

Wright is also known for her legendary “Tonight Is The Night” from the 1978 multi-platinum album “Betty Wright Live.”  In 1985, Wright formed her own label, Miss B Records. In 1988, she made history as the first black female artist to score a gold album on her own label with the album Mother Wit, which featured the soul classic "No Pain, No Gain."

Throughout the years, Wright remains a super presence on the music scene and has collaborated with a long list of recording artists that include Erykah Badu, Regina Belle, Millie Jackson, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Mathis and Angie Stone.

We welcome the incomparable Betty Wright as our special music guest at the March 2 Amateur Night at the Apollo.
