Danny Mixon

Showman's Jazz Club, Harlem Jazz Shrines 2012.  During an afternoon outing at the Apollo Theater with his grandfather, Danny Asbury Mixon was inspired by the jazz musicians he heard and decided he wanted to play the piano. Early on in his career he performed with Sam Brown's band backing Patti Labelle & the Blue Bells, Art Blakely among others.  His first professional organ gig was with Carlos Garnet at the Baby Grand in Brooklyn. In the mid 90’s he appeared regularly at Showman’s. Danny has worked extensively with Betty Carter, Charles Mingus, Yusef Lateef, the Lionel Hampton Big Band and with Frank Foster.  Danny is currently the Musical Director of the legendary Lenox Lounge in Harlem.  He is also an instructor with Jazzmobile and The New School. He also gives private instructions.
